Ondo Lawmaker, Akinsuroju, raises alarm over activities of illegal miners

The lawmaker, representing ileoluji/Okeigbo Constituency in the House of Assembly, Nelson Akinsuroju has condemned the activities of illegal miners in Ileoluji,Okeigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, calling on relevant agencies at the federal level to checkmate such invasion.

The lawmaker was reacting to a petition written to the house of assembly by the Jegun of Ileoluji, Oba Julius Adetimehin, asking the Legislative arm to wade into what he described as invasion and unchecked activities of illegal miners in the community.

Oba Adetimehin in the petition had said, “We are writing to you with an urgent plea for immediate action regarding the catastrophic situation our Community is currently facing due to the invasion and unchecked activities of Illegal Miners.

“We cannot emphasize enough the magnitude of this crisis and implore for immediate intervention.

“Over the past few months, our once peaceful Communities starting from Kajola, Owode Usama and now extended to Oluwasola all in Ile-Oluji Kingdom has been occupied and experiencing relentless activities of illegal miners.

“These illegal miners have shown no regard for the law, human life, or the environment as they ravage our lands, leaving behind a trail of destruction and devastation of land and properties.

“Despite our countless efforts to engage law enforcement agencies, writing reports on this issue to the relevant authorities up to the Governor’s Office, the situation has escalated to a level where our lives and livelihoods are under constant threat.”

Addressing the plenary on Tuesday, Akinsuroju who joined other lawmakers to condemn the barbaric and dangerous activities of the illegal miners in strong terms, explained that such must be curtailed in order to ensure safety of lives and property in the State.

The Lawmaker who called for the immediate intervention of Ondo State Government, charged security operatives to work closely with traditional rulers to put at an end to the menace.
