Students of the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA on Wednesday went on rampage to protest unavailability of light and lack of water in their hostels.
The protesting students who trooped out with placards locked all gates leading to the campus, making the University’s workers stranded outside the gates but the protest did not affect movement of vehicles along the Akure- Ilesha Road.
Speaking with newsmen, one of the students Comrade Makinde Pelumi said they only bore the hardship during the text period but could not continue when the exams were around in the next two weeks time hence the protest.
Another student comrade Chineye Osuba said the protest was embarked upon to make the management understand their plights.
The students urged the school management to find a way and solve solve the problems facing them urgently.
It was gathered that the management had rationed the light by reducing electricity supply to 3 hours per day which has also affected water supply on campus.
FUTA REACTS
The management of FUTA says it is looking into alternative sources to ensure that constant electricity supply is being provided on the campus.
The institution’s public relations officer, Mr Adebanjo Adegbenro disclosed this while reacting to the protest staged by the students.
Mr Adegbenro said the acute supply of electricity to the campus had led to non availability of water supply on the campus.
He therefore urged the students to bear with the management towards addressing the situation.
Mr Adegbenro said the light had been restored and pumping of water was ongoing to meet the demands of the students.
He however pointed out that the light issue was not peculiar only to FUTA but all over Akure.
