The ancient town of Akungba-Akoko in Ondo state was on Friday thrown into mourning as a fatal accident allegedly claimed three lives.
Details about the accident are still sketchy but it was learnt that three lives were lost while two of the victims were siblings.
It was also gathered that the private vehicle, that killed the victims belongs to a suspected Yahoo Boy as the vehicle was burnt by irate youths of the town.
The Ondo Sector Commander of the Road Safety Commission, Mr Ezekiel Son’Allah, confirmed the accident, adding that it was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation on the part of the vehicles involved.
Son’Allah said, “Three persons were killed while the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation. The victims were taken to Aduloju Hospital Akungba by the policemen.”
While cautioning motorists to avoid violating traffic rules, the FRSC boss opined that speed breakers should be mounted on the road to forestall recurrent crashes on the road.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Youth Network (OSYN) has called for the dualisation of the Akungba-Ikare road to avert further carnage on the road.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officers, Christopher Olusa after the unfortunate incident, OSYN described the incident as not only heartbreaking but also an urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in our communities.
“The loss of lives in this accident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by inadequate road infrastructure, particularly in busy areas like the university vicinity in Akungba. As a bustling hub for students, traders, and community settlers, it is imperative that immediate intervention is carried out to address the pressing issue of road safety in the region,” the statement reads.
OSYN called on the government to swiftly intervene and provide assistance to the affected families and the community at large.
“Furthermore, we urge the government to prioritize the dualization of the road leading to Akungba to prevent future tragedies of this nature. The dualization of the road is not only inevitable but also essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users in the area.”
