The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Dr Samuel Akintunde, said on Monday that the nation’s standard of education system was not falling but that institutions in the country are not up-to-date in terms of innovations and inventions.

Akintunde, who stated this during a press conference to herald the 60th Founders’ Day celebration and conferment of the Award of Excellence on Distinguished Alumni of the institution, stressed the need for governments at all levels to intensify efforts towards upgrading teaching resources across the tertiary institutions in the country.

He argued that if truly the standard of education in Nigeria has fallen, other countries like the United Kingdom and the United States of America would not be looking for Nigerians to come and teach in their countries.

Akinto, however, describes as untrue the notion that the standard of education in Nigeria is falling, but the government says it needs to upgrade teaching resources to further improve the standard of education in Nigeria.

According to him, meagre funding has also accounted for some of the problems affecting quality education in Nigeria, urging the government to adequately fund education in the country.

He noted that sufficient money has not been allocated to education to maintain the standard of education in the country, hence leading to a fall in the quality of education.

Speaking on the activities lined up for the 60th Founders’ Day celebration, the acting DVC said, “It gladdens my heart to inform the general public that the benevolence of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, that is, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in revalidating the upgrade of the former College of Education to the University of Education and directing the immediate implementation of the conversion led to a series of events that culminated in the approval of 25-degree programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the take-off of academic activities in the nascent university with effect from 2023/2024 admissions.

“We would like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of certain great personalities towards the realisation of this dream.

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate Osemawe-in-Council and, by extension, the people of Ondo Kingdom for the result of their perseverance in working assiduously for 60 decades to eventually achieve their noble craving and target.

“I congratulate the entire staff and students of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. It’s no longer a daydream or a white goose chase. Your dream of attending Adeyemi Federal University of Education has come true.

“I must thank the unions COEASU, SSUCOEN, NASU, and NACEATON. They fought the way they knew best until victory was bestowed on the struggle by divine grace.

“Unparalleled gratitude goes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom God used to cause great rejoicing for all of us connected to this institution by that decision to enforce the lawful upgrading to university. We are eternally grateful to our beloved and dear President.”

The National President of the Adeyemi Alumni Association, Dr Festus Oyebade, said there will be an alumni lecture, while some buildings will be commissioned with some of the university roads on May 21, 2024.

Oyebade said, “On Wednesday, which is the university anniversary day, there will be the university anniversary lecture to be delivered by Prof. Tunde Babawale.

“To this end, the whole of the day is hereby declared lecture-free for the students. All staff, both academic and non-teaching, are requested to be seated by 9.45 am.

“On Friday, May 24th, there will be an Alumni Anniversary Lecture, which will start at 8 am and be delivered by Dr. Chris Emeruwa, a one-time Students Union President. To this end, that day is also declared a lecture-free day from 8 to 2.

“There will be Jumat Service on Friday, while the Diamond Anniversary Lecture to be delivered by the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and other programmes will be coming up on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

“All staff are encouraged to fully participate in all the activities, as the 60th anniversary will only come up once in a lifetime.”
