Those arrested last week during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Akure, Ondo State by men of the Nigeria Police have been released from the police custody.
They were released on Sunday night after uproar by Nigerians who condemned the arrest, describing it as undemocratic.
The arrested protesters included the governorship candidate of African Action Congress in the forthcoming November 16, 2024 election in the state, Kunle Ajayi.
An eyewitness disclosed that the protesters who had converged on the popular NEPA roundabout, were dispersed by the men of security agents but they refused to leave the venue.
According to one of the protesters, Barr. Tope Temokun, who condemned the arrest of nine protesters, confirmed their release on his facebook page.
Temokun said, “TODAY NO SABBATH FOR OUR CP IN AKURE: As a result of pressure from the relentless forces of the struggle, the Commissioner of Police of Ondo had to resume to office today Sunday (yesterday), the Sabbath day, to see to the release of our detained comrades.
“This 8:35pm of this Sunday, the 11th of August 2024, six out of the seven arrested protesters in Akure were released by the Commissioner of Police, while still holding on to Patrick Owolabi, the TIB coordinator Ondo on a flimsy ground.
“Justice is no justice if it’s cut into half. By tomorrow we must intensify our campaign to free Owolabi.”
