The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Akure branch, has officially kicked off its Engineering Week 2024 on Monday, with a call to action from the branch’s chairman, Stephen Bolawole.
The week-long event, held under the theme “Green Technology for food security and climate change Mitigation” reflects the commitment of engineers towards leveraging innovation to secure a better future for all Nigerians.
Addressing Newsmen at a press conference in Akure the state capital, the Branch Chairman, Bolawole said, “Food security and climate change are among the most urgent global challenges, and the engineering community is at the forefront of developing solutions. Our theme for this week, “Green Technology for Food Security and Climate Change Mitigation,” reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to secure a better future for all.”
Bolawole further said, “As we embark on this week’s activities, I encourage all members to participate fully. Let us take this opportunity to deepen our understanding of green technology and its potential to transform our world. Together, we can lead the way in developing sustainable solutions that will secure our future.
“What is Green Technology? Green technology refers to innovations and practices that are environmentally friendly and designed to reduce our impact on the planet. This includes renewable energy like solar and wind, energy-efficient systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and methods to reduce waste. The core idea is to use resources in a way that preserves the environment for future generations.
“What is Food Security? Food security ensures that all people have access to enough safe and nutritious food to lead healthy lives. It’s not just about quantity, but also about quality, availability, and affordability. Food security is essential for preventing hunger and malnutrition, which are fundamental to human well-being.
“What is Climate Change? Climate change involves long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly due to human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to global warming and severe weather events. Addressing climate change is critical to protecting our ecosystems and way of life
“Connecting Green Technology to Food Security and Climate Change Mitigation Green technology plays a crucial role in both food security and climate change mitigation. By adopting sustainable agricultural practices, conserving water, and reducing waste, we can produce enough food to feed the global population without depleting natural resources. Furthermore, renewable energy and energy efficient technologies help reduce the emissions that cause climate change, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.
“During this Engineering Week, we have planned a series of events to engage our members and the public. Today’s press conference marks the start Tomorrow Tuesday 13th August, 2024 is the AGM, on Wednesday 14th, concurrent workshops will be held across our engineering divisions, where experts will discuss the application of green technology
“On Thursday 15th August 2024, Indoor Games at the Branch, followed by a Jumat service on the 16th August 2024 at the Akure Central Mosque.
“Saturday 17th August 2024 will be a night of celebration with our dinner and award ceremony, where we will honor outstand contributions to our field.
“On Sunday 18th August 2024, we will come together for a thanksgiving service at Christ Apostolic Church Revival Center ijoka Akure, and on Monday, 19th August, 2024, we will conclude with an Executive Committee Election.”
