The Ondo State Waste management Board on Tuesday said it has cleared heaps of refuse on medians of major roads in Akure, the state capital.
In a chat with Roving Reporters, the Chairperson of the Board, Mrs Yinka Alabi said she had directed the agency workers to start clearing the refuse, giving assurance that all roads were refuse-free.
Roving Reporters had reported how residents littered the major roads with heaps of refuse which could pose danger the people and road users.
Reacting, Mrs Alabi however condemned indiscriminate dumping of waste by residents of the state capital.

She said, “There is always indiscriminate dumping of refuse by the public to the dividers and the medians. It is an inappropriate attitude of our people.
“The old culture the people have built over the years can only be addressed with strong enforcement by our agency.
“The people must develop the culture of dumping their refuse in waste bin.
“It is the responsibilities of our PSPs that collect refuse from households to do so that disposing refuse at the roadsides will reduce.
“Many people evade payment, that is why they dispose at road Medians. They don’t want to subscribe even with the service, at the level of the community. That is why we see them bringing the waste to the roadside. But for now, we have commenced daily evacuation, which we have done today.
“In addition to this, one of the commonest ways which is recognized by the environmental law of the state is that we involve what we call early morning and night policing to address the issue, and which we shall embark on this to address the menace of indiscriminate dumping of refuse at the roadside.
“As we can see recently, we placed some waste bins at the market sides so that traders can always dispose of their refuse.
“So we are working towards addressing the indiscriminate dumping by ensuring that our trucks carry out prompt evacuation. We will embark on morning and night policing.”
