In a crackdown against illegal timber smuggling network, the Ondo State taskforce on forestry and produce has confisticated a truck loaded with timber and arrested the driver.
The team led by the Special Assistant on Forestry and produce, Ondo South Comrade Bidemi Joshua Obayagban said the truck loaded with illegal timbers was arrested at Igbotako.
The truck was said to have been transporting illegal timber from Omotosho forest area in Okitipupa local government area.
The timbers were in a truck belonging to a bottling company suspected to be heading for illegal sawmills.
During arrest, the driver could not provide valid documents for transporting the timber.
This led to the seizure of the truck and the consignment and handed over to the Amotekun corps for further action.
Comrade Obayagban who led the operation, issued a warning to all those involved in illegal timber trade within the district.
He warned truck owners to ensure that their vehicles are not used for transporting timber without necessary transit pass and documents.
Obayagban said, “We are determined to dismantle the network involved in illegal timber smuggling.
“The seizure of the consignment is a result of the concerted efforts of our team and citizens. The preservation of our forests is vital and those responsible for such illegal activities will be brought to justice.”
He also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to illegal timber trade.
