Why We Delayed Fixing Portholes – Ondo Govt

by Roving

The Ondo State government on Monday said the delay in fixing failed portions on major roads in Akure, the state capital is due to incessant rain being experienced at the moment.

Roving Reporters had been monitoring the condition of Major roads in the state capital as motorists and other road users lamented the abandonment of failed portions of the road by the state government.

Roving Reporters had in August 27 reported the shady process of filling portholes on major roads in the state capital by officials of the state ministry of Works.

Similarly, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had ordered that all portholes be filled, but the ministry of works are yet complete the rehabilitation.

Speaking with Roving Reporters, the Director, Civil Engineering Department, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Funmilayo Oluwatayo said, “The delay is because of the incessant rain.

“Last week Monday, the Ministry was out to fix the portholes but the whole place is kind of waterlogged and all the rest.

“The place was filled with stone-based material last week, which is expected to be there for a while, allowing vehicles to ply it to compact well.

“Unfortunately, throughout that last week, it was raining, and those things were washing away.

“So, that’s why, and you can see even to yesterday, it’s only today now that there had been no rain. So, it’s the weather that has actually caused the delay.

“And by now, if not because of the rain, the pothole has been partially filled with stone-based, which is now expected to be sealed up.

“But there’s no way we can seal it up now. If we seal it up with asphalt, there are still some contents of water underneath.

“So, that is the main problem. Actually, the Ministry had actually addressed it last week, by putting stone-based there. But I believe it was, the thing must have been washed away this rain, or the way the rain had been falling continuously since last week.“
