The National Orientation Agency (NOA) says its sensitisation on five key initiatives of government including the new tax reform bill, was more than a call to support the present administration, but to reposition Nigeria.
The others are awareness on security, HIV/AIDS, the get rich quick syndrome among youths and human right issues.
Addressing a news conference on Tuesday in Akure, the Director-General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, stated the plan of the agency to herald the flag-off of the nationwide sensitisation campaigns.
Issa-Onilu, who was represented by NOA’s Director and Head of Health and Social Services, Dr Ayoola Olufemi, said that the campaign represented a call to action for every Nigerians to join hands in addressing the key five critical issues.
He explained that government’s plan was to simplify the tax system through four comprehensive bills; Nigeria Tax Bill and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill.
The others are the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
He said the reform would eliminate multiple taxation, support low-income earners, and introduce transparent digital processes for tax collection.
According to the D-G, the reform will also ensure tax revenues were visibly used to improve public services like schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.
Issa-Onilu,who emphasised on the recent celebration of World HIV/AIDS Day, pointed out the government’s commitment to providing free and accessible HIV testing and counselling services nationwide.
He further said that efforts were on to ensure widespread availability of antiretroviral treatments in partnerships with international organisations to combat stigmatisation and discrimination.
Commenting on the issue of security, the NOA D-G said the government was dedicated to improving Nigeria’s security architecture with better equipment, training, and funding for security agencies.
He said that technology would also be deployed for intelligence gathering and surveillance.
Issa-Onilu stressed the role of citizens in reporting suspicious activities, stressing that “Security begins with you and me.”
“We are commencing a nationwide Mobilisation of Nigerians to unite in our commitment to addressing these pressing issues and fostering a more informed, secure and ethical society.
“The challenges before us require collective actions and active participation from all Nigerians.
“We count on traditional leaders, religious institutions civil society organiaations and educational institutions to amplify these messages and extend their reach,” he said.
Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to reject shortcuts to wealth and embrace integrity, hard work, and the opportunities provided through government initiatives to make life better for citizens
He also used the opportunity to urge media organisations to help shape public perceptions and attitudes.
Also, the Ondo State NOA Director, Mr James Adekunle, solicited the support of journalists and the general public to support government’s initiative.
