One Year of Aiyedatiwa: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Exactly one year ago, a new chapter in the political history of Ondo State began with the emergence of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, following the painful passing of his predecessor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. This marked a significant turning point for Ondo State, as the State’s political landscape was reshaped by a new leadership.

Upon his swearing-in, Governor Aiyedatiwa made a firm promise to continue the legacies of the late Akeredolu. He vowed to complete ongoing projects and ensure that the policies of his predecessor came to fruition. Aiyedatiwa has largely kept his word, ensuring that no significant initiative begun by Akeredolu was abandoned. However, one must ask: what exactly are Akeredolu’s legacies that have shaped the current administration’s performance?

It is important to step back and assess the broader context. Akeredolu inherited a well-run State from Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, a former governor whose administration was marked by groundbreaking achievements across various sectors. However, Akeredolu’s tenure quickly became a shadow of Mimiko’s legacy, with many of the life-changing projects either neglected or abandoned. The mother-and-child healthcare programs, once the pride of Ondo State, dwindled into obscurity. Free shuttle buses for children, once a symbol of the State’s commitment to welfare, were either forgotten or repurposed as campaign tools in distant states like Imo. Akure, which had won global recognition for its cleanliness, two times UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, became overrun with litter, its parks transformed into neglected wilderness, and its streets suffocated by refuse. The Oja Oba market, once a beacon of urban development, became an eyesore with outdated, poorly executed infrastructure, the popular “Odi Jericho” that casted a dark cloud on the popular market.

It is critical to note that while Akeredolu had genuine intentions to serve Ondo State, he was hampered by a web of personal and political challenges. His leadership was often undermined by the too much influence of his family- the principalities around him, particularly his wife, Betty Akeredolu, and their son, Babajide Akeredolu. Their influence over key decisions in the state government made it clear that Akeredolu’s good intentions were often at odds with the internal power dynamics that dominated his administration.

On the other hand, Akeredolu’s administration did make strides in certain areas, especially in terms of security in Ondo and the Southwest region. Under his leadership, the state witnessed an improvement in security, despite the widespread banditry. There were also some infrastructural developments, though these were limited in scope and impact.

So, unlike Aketi, when Lucky Aiyedatiwa took over the mantle of leadership, he inherited a government in disarray, an administration marked by internal divisions and stalled projects. Aiyedatiwa’s first year in office has been defined by his efforts to stabilize the state and build on the foundation left by Akeredolu. It could easily have gone the other way, with Aiyedatiwa facing the wrath of the public for inheriting a broken system. However, by God’s grace and his own political acumen, he has managed to steer the State in a positive direction.

One of Aiyedatiwa’s key achievements has been his commitment to ensuring that the projects initiated by his predecessor are completed. Whether in terms of road construction, infrastructure development, or social welfare schemes, Governor Aiyedatiwa has kept his promises to the memory of Akeredolu by maintaining focus on ongoing projects. Beyond merely finishing what was started, Aiyedatiwa has worked to improve the efficiency and scope of these projects, introducing his own initiatives and expanding on the foundation laid by his predecessor.

In addition to completing ongoing projects, Governor Aiyedatiwa has shown a commitment to inclusivity and innovation in his governance style. His appointments have been carefully selected, with a focus on both competence and the ability to deliver results. While not without flaws, like any human endeavour, these appointments are a reflection of Aiyedatiwa’s desire to build a government that can work for everyone, across all sectors of Ondo society.

Take, for example, the choice of his deputy, which is both strategic and brilliant. Chief Olayide Owolabi Adelami possesses a charismatic personality, combining professionalism with a deep sense of humanity. Loved by his people, he is not only well-regarded but also highly knowledgeable in his field.

Consider, also, the selection of Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan as Chief Press Secretary. The Governor is fortunate to have a professional of his caliber, who is doing an excellent job of promoting government activities and maintaining effective communication with the public. As expected of a savvy CPS, his approach to handling ‘unofficial street media’ is commendable, particularly given that his principal’s adversaries remain a constant presence.

The Governor’s selection of key personnel within the state government has been strategic. Comrade Rasak One, an excellent and brilliant choice, though occasionally seems to allow his activist spirit to overshadow his work in the political realm. While his passion for social justice is commendable, a more balanced approach could help him navigate the complexities of governance more smoothly. Similarly, the Finance Commissioner has brought a level of rigor and discipline to the state’s finances, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently. Were it not for her firm personality, the coffers of the state might have been pillaged, making it difficult to finance crucial projects and policies.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s appointments in the areas of women’s affairs, entrepreneurship, and innovation also stand out. Mrs. Seun Osemaye, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs, and Mr. Summy Smart Francis, the Special Adviser on Entrepreneurship and Innovation, have demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges facing their respective sectors. Their creativity and dedication have contributed to the steady improvement of social and economic conditions in Ondo State.

The Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Temitayo Oluwatoyin Tukana, is another key player in Aiyedatiwa’s administration. His calm and measured approach to governance, as well as his understanding of the people, is an asset. However, at times, his silence may be perceived as a lack of proactive leadership. In a government facing constant external pressure, it is vital for leaders to speak out and defend their actions and policies.

Prince Olusegun Omojuwa, the Chief of Staff, is also a strong contender for this list. His ability to effectively navigate the delicate balance between the political and administrative demands of his role is commendable. Public commentary surrounding him suggests that his performance in blending these two aspects is leaving positive impression on the people.

The Attorney General, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, deserves special mention. While I would have preferred not to be the one to speak about him due to my close association with him, I cannot deny the qualities I know he possesses that make him a delight to meaningful people. He is already an accomplished professional, with one of the leading high-end law firms in Abuja and the most revered rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in his possession. Additionally, he has been honoured by the Federal Government with the statutory rank of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

His performance at the Ministry of Justice has been nothing short of exceptional. Ajulo has reformed the ministry’s operations, transforming it into a more responsive and efficient body. His proactive approach to addressing issues, such as the recent crowd management measures he developed in response to reports of stampedes across several states, has earned praise nationwide. The idea was adopted by over 12 States within 48 hours. Ajulo’s ability to maintain his activism while working within the political system is a testament to his versatility and commitment to justice. He is an Attorney General in the real sense of it and a big time spender not the one that would flag down a taxi after the NBA conference.

However, not all appointments have been as successful. It wouldn’t be pleasant to mention names but whoever has done well would know. Some individuals in the administration seem to view their roles as mere positions of privilege, rather than opportunities to serve the people. In some ministries, there is a noticeable lack of initiative, and certain appointees seem content with the perks of office rather than the responsibility that comes with it. I cannot imagine that few days ago, I was asking about the name of the commissioner of a very crucial ministry. It is not encouraging. People like that need to imbibe the vision and the energy of the Governor to be able to deliver all his promises to the people of Ondo State.

Ultimately, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s first year in office has been a story of stabilization and cautious progress. While the road has not been without its bumps, his leadership has provided a sense of hope and optimism for Ondo State. Through his strategic appointments and his focus on completing key projects, Aiyedatiwa has been able to restore public faith in the government. His success lies in his ability to unite the people of Ondo State and build a government that reflects their needs and aspirations.

One year into his tenure, it is clear that Governor Aiyedatiwa has provided a much-needed sense of direction for Ondo State. The sun is indeed shining again in Ondo, and the people can feel the positive impact of his leadership. While there are still challenges ahead, the progress made in his first year has laid a solid foundation for the future.

In conclusion, Aiyedatiwa’s leadership in Ondo State can be characterized as a breath of fresh air, a new beginning built on the lessons of the past. If he continues on this path, maintaining his focus on good governance, inclusivity, and development, Ondo State can look forward to even greater achievements in the years to come.
