Ondo Govt clears Air over additional Levy in Public Schools

by Roving

As public schools resume throughout Ondo State on Monday, the State Government has declared that it has not approved any additional levy for students in both primary and secondary schools.

Government insisted that the Cloud-Based Education Programme for SS3 students in state public secondary schools was the initiative of the Parent/Teachers Association, PTA and Ondo State Chapter of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS)

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Olaolu Akindolire while monitoring school resumption in Owo and environ said the state government still operates tuition free education policy in public schools across the state.

He explained that government approved the request of PTA and ANCOPSS after it was convinced that the “Cloud-Based Education Programme” has the potential to positively transform the preparation and performance of students in their final examinations, and was only for SS3 students in public secondary schools.

Represented by the Director of School Service in the ministry, Dr Akindele Ige, the Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the turnout and enthusiasms of staff and students on the first day of resumption, describing it as healthy for the system.

He said the proactive and unrelenting efforts of  government through the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, have put both the staff and students on their toes and ensure that the system runs smoothly, adding that Officials of the ministry were simultaneously monitoring the resumption across the state.

Mr Akindolire also expressed his joy that peace has finally returned to the ancient city of Owo after a curfew imposed on it by the state government two weeks ago following deadly clashes by some cult groups and commended the residents of the town and security agents for allowing peace to reign.

“We thank Almighty God and appreciate the people of Owo and the efforts of security agencies to restore peace to the town. We want to implore our people not to take laws into their own hands no matter how provoked as the state government is ready to ensure that everyone in the state gets justice no matter how highly of lowly placed”

While imploring the people of Owo to allow peace reign permanently, Mr Akindolire however urged school authorities across the state to be security conscious always by monitoring strange movements within and around their school premises, while also striving to secure their schools’ property including lands.

The Commissioner while cautioning against truancy, absenteeism, bulling and other unwholesome practices by students, also encouraged parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and wards, especially the company they keep and what they do after school.

Mr. Akindolire also called on parents and guardians to ensure that they provide the needed educational materials such as text books, uniform, locker among others for their children and wards to enhance a smooth teaching and learning procedure.

He assured the people of the state that government would continue to prioritize education and ensure that the state maintains it’s leading position in the country through infrastructural development and quality programmes.
