Man stabs Co-tenant to death with Broken Bottle In Ondo

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Akure has ordered that a 25-year-old apprentice, Sunday Igbekoyi, who allegedly stabbed his co-tenant to death with broken bottle during an argument, be remanded in Olokuta Custodial Centre.

Igbekoyi was brought to court by the police on one count bothering on murder.

According to the police prosecutor, Owolabi Edu told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on February 15, 2025, at Egunmo Street Ode-Irele, in the Ondo State Magisterial District.

Edu alleged that the defendant stabbed his co-tenant, one Sunkami Akinyelu, with a broken bottle on his neck, which eventually led to his death.

He said the defendant on returning from his place of work, overheard that the deceased had quarreled with his wife over a longing issue, approached him and during the process stabbed him with a broken bottle.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 319 and 355 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. II, laws of Ondo state, 2006.

Edu, however, told the court to remand the defendant at any correctional centre in the state pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Chief Magistrate F.A Akinboboye, who did not take the plea of the defendant, granted the prosecution’s request to remand the defendant at Olokuta Custodial Centre, Akure.

She ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Magistrate Akinboboye adjourned the case until April 22, for mention.
