The Ondo State Government has ramped up efforts to tackle flooding in Akure and surrounding communities through a targeted intervention which focuses on clearing blocked waterways and improving drainage systems.
As part of this initiative, two excavators have been deployed to key areas within the Akure metropolis.
The operation is currently underway in the Ajipowo area along Ondo Road in Akure South Local Government Area.
Chairman of Akure South Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Fasua, who is supervising the exercise, emphasized its importance in protecting lives and property.
“No flood-prone area will be neglected,” Fasua assured.
“We will take drastic action to address indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways. It is a bad habit that must be seriously tackled and dealt with.”
He commended the Ondo State Government for its proactive approach and called on residents to support the initiative by adopting responsible waste disposal habits.
Also speaking on the project, Mr. Elisah Ebijimi, the consultant to the state government on the clearing of waterways, highlighted the urgency and scope of the task.
“The state government has ordered us to finish the job on time and we are committed to this,” he stated.
“We are determined to complete the task on time, ensuring timely intervention in flood-prone areas.”
Residents in the affected communities have expressed appreciation for the timely intervention, acknowledging the potential for a significant reduction in flood risk.
This effort forms part of a broader strategy by the Ondo State Government to combat flooding across all 18 local government areas.
The wider plan includes dredging canals, desilting drains, and channelizing waterways to ensure free water flow during the rainy season.
