Ondo Muslim Leaders Decry Masquerade Attack, Demand Justice
Tension is rising in parts of Akoko, Ondo State, as Muslim leaders cry out following what they described as a “violent and provocative invasion” of a mosque and private residence by traditional masqueraders during Islamic prayers.
The incident, which occurred twice on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in Okeagbe Akoko, saw Imam Hussein Muhammad’s home and mosque allegedly attacked by a group of masqueraders, their chief priest — identified as one “Smart” — and several of their followers.
Speaking after an emergency meeting held at ADS Central Mosque, Arigidi Akoko, on Monday, June 16, the League of Imams and Alfas, Akoko Division, condemned the incidents in strong terms.
“We were praying when they stormed the mosque,” said a visibly shaken congregant who witnessed the invasion. “It was terrifying. Women and children fled in fear. This is not just an attack on a building, but on our faith.”
In a communique issued at the end of the emergency meeting, the League demanded a public apology from the masquerade group, particularly the Chief Priest.
They also called on relevant authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the matter.
“We are peace-loving people,” said one of the senior clerics present. “But we will not watch silently as our sanctity is violated. Our people must be protected.”
Among the League’s demands is the restriction of traditionalist activities to designated areas, with a plea that such displays be kept off Thursdays and Fridays — days considered sacred by Muslims.
Freedom of Worship Must Be Respected
The communique also emphasized the need for respect toward Muslim women, particularly regarding the freedom to wear the hijab without fear of harassment or intimidation.
“This is not just about religion. It’s about the right to worship freely,” another cleric explained. “We are calling on the government, traditional rulers, and security agencies to ensure that Islamic activities can continue without interference.”
The League gave a two-week ultimatum for an apology and investigation to be initiated. Failure to comply, they warned, may force the body to consider further action.
Local residents are calling for calm, but there is growing unease as many fear potential escalation if authorities fail to act swiftly.
Community Calls for Peace
While emotions run high, some voices in the community are urging dialogue and reconciliation.
“Both faiths have lived side by side for generations,” said a youth leader from Arigidi. “We must not let provocation undo the harmony we’ve built.”
As the situation unfolds, eyes now turn to local and state authorities to address the grievances and restore peace to the region.
