••• Vows to Clear Arrears by September
The Federal Government has resumed the phased payment of the N35,000 wage award arrears to civil servants, with assurances that all outstanding payments will be cleared in the coming months.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), the government confirmed that the wage award, first introduced as a palliative following the removal of fuel subsidies, began disbursement in May 2025.
The next tranche is scheduled for June, to be paid immediately after the monthly salary.
“The next payment of the N35,000 wage award will be done in June 2025 after payment of the June 2025 salary,” the OAGF stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare amid ongoing economic reforms.
The five-month arrears payment, which was delayed due to fiscal constraints, is now being paid in phases to ensure smooth implementation without disrupting other financial obligations.
The wage award was part of a broader relief package introduced to cushion the impact of subsidy removal and inflationary pressures on public sector workers.
With economic challenges still biting, the phased payment plan is seen as a critical lifeline for many federal employees.
Worker unions had earlier raised concerns over the delays, urging the government to prioritize timely disbursement.
As implementation continues, the government reaffirmed its dedication to upholding its promises to workers and promoting inclusive economic recovery.
