…Says diversion of local allocations undermines democracy, service delivery
The Ondo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has strongly criticized the state government for allegedly diverting federal allocations meant for local government councils, describing the action as a gross violation of constitutional provisions and democratic norms.
In a statement signed by the party’s State Chairman, Barr. Gbenga Akinbuli, the SDP accused the state government of unlawfully collecting and withholding funds constitutionally designated for grassroots development, thereby depriving local governments of critical resources for healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.
“We have credible information that federal allocations meant for local governments are being collected by the state government.
This revelation raises serious concerns about fiscal federalism, local autonomy, and the principles of democracy,” Akinbuli stated.
He condemned the practice as “unconscionable” and called for the immediate release of all withheld funds to the affected local councils.
“This unlawful collection must cease. The state government must prioritize transparency and accountability in the management of local government funds,” he added.
Akinbuli further accused the ruling party in the state of undermining democratic processes, citing alleged manipulation of previous local government and state elections to exclude opposition participation and entrench one-party dominance.
“The actions of the state government are consistent with efforts to suppress the will of the people.
The manipulation of election results to keep opposition parties out of power is a clear sign of authoritarian tendencies,” he alleged.
The SDP is demanding that federal allocations be disbursed directly to local governments without interference, to enable them function independently and effectively.
“The people deserve better governance. It is time for the state government to uphold the constitution and respect the rights of local authorities to govern in the interest of their communities,” Akinbuli concluded.
He also called on the Attorney General of the Federation to urgently intervene, stating that the continued disregard for local government autonomy by some states, including Ondo, runs contrary to the federal government’s professed commitment to decentralization and constitutional order.
