Tension is mounting in Ondo State as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN has confirmed receipt of multiple petitions demanding a formal coroner’s inquest into the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, amid swirling allegations and claims of inconsistencies.
Ajulo, in a statement issued Monday, acknowledged public concerns and emphasized that the Ministry of Justice is duty-bound to act under the Coroners Law of Ondo State once credible concerns are raised.
“This is not out of place,” he stated. “Citizens have a legal right to demand clarity when there are lingering doubts or suspicion of foul play. The law exists to serve and protect the people.”
The petitions, according to Ajulo, were submitted by both individuals and organized groups—including professional bodies and residents of the late governor’s hometown—citing what they described as “troubling inconsistencies” surrounding the circumstances of Akeredolu’s death.
“We have received a number of petitions from across and beyond the state. Let me be clear: due process will be followed,” Ajulo said firmly.
“If invitations or arrests become necessary, nothing will stop us from doing the needful.”
While assuring the public of a transparent process, Ajulo also warned against premature judgments or politicization of the matter, stressing that the decision to summon individuals or inspect Akeredolu’s remains lies solely with the appointed Coroner Judge.
“No individual will be presumed guilty. The process will not be hijacked by emotion or political influence. The law will take its full course,” he said.
The Attorney General called for calm and urged all stakeholders to treat the sensitive issue with “civility and dignity,” in honor of the former governor’s legacy and the peace of the state.
Ajulo reaffirmed the commitment of the Aiyedatiwa administration to uphold justice: “No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection. Where the law provides a remedy, this government will not shy away from action.”
Governor Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, served two terms as governor before his death on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67, following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
As the state awaits the next steps, speculation continues to swirl, with many asking whether the coroner’s court will unearth hidden truths—or confirm an already painful chapter.
