Late ex-President to be flown home from London by VP Shettima

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Saturday.

In a solemn message released late Sunday, President Tinubu confirmed the death of his predecessor, saying he had personally spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the late President’s widow, to offer his condolences.

The President also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the remains of the late leader back to Nigeria for burial.

According to sources close to the Buhari family, the former President died at about 4:30 p.m. on July 12, following a prolonged illness.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian President for two terms—from 2015 to 2023—and was previously Nigeria’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

More details surrounding burial arrangements are expected to be released by the Presidency in the coming days.
