The Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Mr. Ezekiel Imole Adeniran, has been assassinated, sparking widespread grief and outrage across the university community and Ondo State at large.
Mr. Adeniran, who only assumed office as the university’s third substantive Registrar on January 6, 2025, was found dead in his residence in Ondo town on the morning of Thursday, July 17. His death is now under active investigation by the Ondo State Police Command.
Confirming the incident, a university source said: “He was found lifeless in his house on Thursday morning. It’s shocking. We believe the police will uncover the truth.”
The university, in an official statement issued by Mr. Isaac Oluyi, Head of Media and Protocol, described the death as “devastating and shocking,” noting that Mr. Adeniran was still at his duty post on Monday, July 14.
“The news has thrown the university into mourning. Mr. Adeniran served diligently from January till his untimely death. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” the statement read.
Similarly, the Head of Human Resources at UNIMED, Mr. M.A. Akinkuade, described the late registrar as a “dedicated and hardworking colleague” whose impact on the university will be remembered for years.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command has officially confirmed the assassination. Spokesperson SP Olayinka Ayanlade told reporters that the case was reported at the Fanibi Police Division and is under serious investigation.
“From what we know, two men allegedly emerged from a bush and forced a substance into the victim’s mouth. We have not yet confirmed the exact location of the attack, but our detectives are on it. We are after those responsible,” Ayanlade said.
He urged the public to come forward with any useful information, assuring that no stone would be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
As the university mourns, staff, students, and members of the academic community continue to express shock and sadness, demanding justice for the slain administrator.
