In a bold move to promote financial literacy among young Nigerians, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education, has launched the Nigerian Capital Market – Secondary Schools Quiz Competition.
The initiative, powered by Core International and supported by Financial Markets Indaba, aims to instill financial knowledge, investment habits, and decision-making skills in students across the country.
Set to begin in September 2025, the national academic tournament will span six months and involve 370 secondary schools—ten schools from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The competition will unfold in three stages:
State-Level Preliminaries
Zonal Semi-Finals
National Grand Finale
Organisers say the programme is designed to promote academic excellence, teamwork, and inclusion, ensuring equal participation from public and private schools nationwide.
“The idea is to empower our youth with the knowledge and skills that are essential in today’s financial world,” the SEC stated, adding that the programme also supports its broader goal of building a more inclusive and informed capital market in Nigeria.
In a significant educational boost, teachers from participating schools will undergo specialised training workshops to guide students through preparation and help integrate financial literacy into classroom learning.
Students will also gain hands-on experience through a Virtual Trading Platform, using live data from the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) to simulate real-time stock trading in a safe, risk-free environment.
According to Core International, the initiative is hosted on the Financial Markets Indaba platform, renowned for its expertise in investor education and national outreach.
Under the theme “Empowering Future Investors through Knowledge,” the quiz competition will explore core financial topics including: Savings and investment, Stock market operations, Economic development and financial planning.
Top-performing students will not only gain national recognition but also win exciting prizes, while contributing to the development of a financially literate generation.
Organisers assure that the process will be transparent and professionally supervised, with adjudication support from all partnering bodies.
