AAUA No Longer Safe – Ondo Assembly laments Insecurity amid Killings

The Ondo State House of Assembly has expressed outrage over the wave of killings rocking Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), warning that the violence poses a serious threat to education and peace in the state.

At a plenary session presided over by Speaker Olamide Oladiji on Monday, the lawmakers unanimously condemned the murder of three students within one week — Abha John Friday, Okah Adrel Eloho, and Joy Adeyemi — all victims of separate brutal attacks allegedly by a landlord, accomplices, and a boyfriend.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance, Tope Agbulu, who represents Akoko South West Constituency II, described the situation as alarming and unacceptable.

He said Akungba-Akoko, once regarded as a peaceful academic town, is now gripped by fear.

“These killings, though carried out by individuals, are fast ruining the image of the host community and pushing students toward unrest,” Agbulu warned.

He urged the state government to initiate a full-scale investigation and ensure the arrest and prosecution of all suspects, including those still at large.

The Assembly called on the Commissioner of Police and the Governor’s Security Aide to immediately deploy joint patrols and security reinforcements in the area.

Agbulu also proposed the creation of a crisis response committee, regular patrols, and strengthened collaboration between university authorities and community leaders.

Deputy Speaker Ololade Gbegudu supported the motion, calling for moral reorientation among youths and community-led sensitisation.

He also urged the Ministry of Women Affairs to design student-protection policies, while traditional rulers were asked to step up peacebuilding efforts.

The lawmakers concluded by insisting that student safety must be treated as a matter of urgency, not just in Akungba but across all higher institutions in the state.
