••• Urges Aiyedatiwa’s Urgent Intervention
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has raised the alarm over the worsening condition of its Press Centre in Alagbaka, Akure, following recent damage to the main hall’s roof and ceiling caused by a rainstorm.
In a communique issued at the end of its monthly congress held on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, the union described the damage as “a threat to the safety and dignity of media practitioners in the state,” and called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to order immediate repair of the affected structure.
The congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, had representatives from all media chapels in attendance and deliberated on issues ranging from media welfare, state of the nation, and journalism practice in Ondo State.
The union applauded the governor for appointing a journalist, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, as Commissioner for Information and Orientation but urged the administration to also show commitment to the infrastructural needs of journalists in the state.
It further decried the increasing casualization of media workers, especially in private broadcast and print outfits, noting that such practice violates international labour standards.
The union called on the Federal and Ondo State Governments to urgently address the shortage of manpower in public-owned media houses including FRCN, NTA Akure, OSRC/Orange FM, and The Hope newspaper.
Commending journalists in the state for upholding ethics in their reporting, the congress cautioned against the spread of fake news, especially with the advent of artificial intelligence tools.
The congress also congratulated the newly re-elected executives of NAWOJ Ondo State Chapter, urging them to continue championing the rights of women and the girl-child.
