The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Monday lavished praise and generous rewards on members of the Super Falcons squad who hail from the state, including standout defender Tosin Demehin, for their role in Nigeria’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

During a colourful civic reception held in Akure on August 4, the Governor gifted Demehin ₦30 million in cash and a brand-new house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile. Two other officials of the team — Mary Akinsola, Media Officer, and Mary Oduboku, Secretary — also received ₦15 million each for their behind-the-scenes contributions to the historic victory.

“This is a proud moment for Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa declared before an enthusiastic crowd. “Tosin Demehin has flown our flag high and proven that our youth can shine on any global stage with discipline and determination.”

Demehin, an indigene of Ilaje Local Government Area, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s defensive line during the tournament hosted in Morocco. A former player with Sunshine Queens FC, she was praised by the Governor as a beacon of resilience, talent and professionalism.

The Governor extended heartfelt appreciation to the two support staff, Akinsola and Oduboku — both hailing from Ondo South — noting that success in team sports rests heavily on committed personnel behind the scenes.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, Aiyedatiwa promised increased investment in sporting infrastructure and talent development, pledging particular support to the Sunshine Stars FC, with a vow to assist in the club’s swift return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the Super Falcons at the national level, calling such gestures vital to boosting athletes’ morale nationwide.

In her response, a visibly elated Demehin expressed gratitude to the state government and its people for the recognition.

“This honour is deeply meaningful to me. Returning home to this level of appreciation renews my hope for the future of women’s football in Nigeria. I urge all stakeholders to keep pushing for growth in the game,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, Henry Segun, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, promised that with continued support, Ondo would become a hub for sporting excellence.

Dele Sunday Ajayi, Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, hailed Aiyedatiwa as the first governor to formally reward WAFCON team members from the state, calling it a powerful boost for young athletes.
