The women of Ondo State, led by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, have lauded Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his historic recognition and reward of Super Falcons defender, Demehin Oluwatosin Blessing.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, in an unprecedented move, rewarded the Ilaje-born footballer with ₦30 million and a fully furnished residential apartment located at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, Akure, for her contributions to Nigeria’s recent triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.
The state government also extended ₦15 million each to two other members of the national team crew who hail from Ondo State, in what many have described as a bold statement of the governor’s commitment to youth and gender empowerment.
Speaking during a reception held in their honour, Dr. Osamaye praised the governor’s gesture as both symbolic and inspiring.
“This is not just a reward for excellence; it is a powerful message to every girl-child in Ondo State that their dreams are valid,” she said.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated true leadership by recognizing and celebrating the achievements of our daughters on the international stage.”
She added that the gesture will go a long way in encouraging young girls and athletes in the state to pursue excellence, especially in sports and related fields.
Dr. Osamaye further stressed the importance of investing in youth and sports development, noting that such recognition will boost morale and foster greater participation among young talents in the state.
Demehin, a former player of Sunshine Queens FC of Akure, currently plies her trade with Turkish giants Galatasaray FC.
Her contributions to the national team’s success have been widely praised, and her story is seen as a beacon of hope and aspiration for many young girls across Nigeria.
