A sombre mood has engulfed Lawa village in Ogbaku autonomous community, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, following the death of a middle-aged man who allegedly took his own life after accusing his wife of infidelity.
The incident, which occurred last Sunday, has left residents in shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased had repeatedly warned his wife and the alleged lover—who is both his childhood friend and a member of the same kindred—over their suspected affair.
However, the wife reportedly vowed to continue the relationship, citing the man’s wealth as an attraction.
A neighbour, identified as Gloria, said the situation reached breaking point when the man allegedly caught his wife and the lover in their matrimonial bed.
“She told him she would not stop seeing the man because he is a rich widower, unlike her husband who was poor. On Sunday, he caught them red-handed.
He couldn’t bear the humiliation. That was why, I believe, he decided to end it all,” Gloria said.
The man’s body was later found hanging from a tree close to his childhood friend’s compound.
The incident has sparked conversations about infidelity, emotional distress, and the devastating consequences of unresolved marital conflict.
As at press time, the police had not yet issued a statement on the matter.
