Beware: NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Over Fake Milk in Markets

by Roving

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians over the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets across the country.

In a public alert released on Friday, the agency revealed that the fake product was reported by Promasidor Nigeria Ltd., the authorised manufacturer and distributor of Cowbell Milk. According to the company, the counterfeit version closely imitates the genuine brand’s packaging, registration number, and trademark.

NAFDAC disclosed that the fraudulent packaging is outdated, last used by Promasidor in September 2023.

How to Spot the Difference
The agency explained that genuine Cowbell Milk has a creamy texture, uses the new “Our Creamy Goodness” packaging design, and carries laser-printed batch details. Its coding appears strictly in the designated coding area, while sealing and cutting on sachets are automated.

On the other hand, the counterfeit version reportedly contains substances that “do not seem like milk,” carries the old “Our Milk” packaging design, uses ink-printed batch details, has coding outside the designated area, and features manually cut edges.

Health Risks
NAFDAC warned that consuming the fake product poses serious dangers, including food poisoning, allergic reactions, organ damage, and even death in extreme cases. Vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are at higher risk.

Enforcement and Public Advisory
The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to begin surveillance and mop up operations to remove the counterfeit sachets from circulation.

Distributors, retailers, and consumers are urged to remain vigilant and purchase only from authorised suppliers. Any suspicious products should be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

Reports of adverse health reactions linked to counterfeit food products can also be submitted through NAFDAC’s pharmacovigilance channels at www.nafdac.gov.ng or via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
