Akungba-Akoko – Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has waded into the crisis rocking Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), following the indefinite service withdrawal declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in protest over unpaid salaries and arrears.
In a swift response, the Governor has directed the University management to commence immediate payment of outstanding salaries to the striking lecturers.
The strike, which was declared after ASUU-AAUA’s Congress on August 21, 2025, has paralysed all academic activities in the institution.
Speaking on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, confirmed the Governor’s directive, stressing that steps were being taken for both immediate relief and long-term stability.
“A committee was set up to resolve the issue. It has met and recommendations have been made. For the salary arrears, the governor has given a directive to the University for the payment of the outstanding salaries. I know that within the next few days the issues will be resolved,” Ajanaku said.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the government has approved an increase in subvention to universities and other tertiary institutions in Ondo State, with the new funding plan expected to be factored into the 2026 budget.
While government officials project a quick resolution, students remain stranded as ASUU maintains its stance that the strike will only be suspended once payments reflect in members’ accounts.
