LAGOS – Controversy has trailed the sudden death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, who reportedly died last Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos at the age of 60.
While official statements described his passing as a tragic loss, emerging reports suggest that the politician’s death may have been linked to domestic violence.
A source alleged that one of Akingboye’s wives pushed him off the balcony during a quarrel, leading to fatal injuries. “The SDP candidate in Ondo State who recently died was killed by his wife.
She allegedly killed him by pushing him off the balcony,” the source claimed, urging security agencies to uncover the truth.
Images circulating online showed bruises and deep cuts on Akingboye’s head and neck, further fueling speculations.
Confirming the development, the police disclosed that a discreet investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities vowed that no stone would be left unturned.
Earlier, Oyeniyi Iwakun, Akingboye’s Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, had announced his death in a statement, describing him as “a man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder.”
Until his death, Akingboye was the CEO of Benshore Maritime, CEO of Clog Oil Systems, President of WeAfrica Group, and held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.
He contested the November 16, 2024 governorship election against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other candidates.
Activists, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians have now demanded transparency in the ongoing probe, warning against any attempt to cover up the incident.
