Amotekun Officers Petition Ondo Assembly Over Lack of Appointment Letters

••• Four Years in Uniform, No Letter of Appointment –  Aggrieved Officers

Akure – Officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, have dragged their grievances before the Ondo State House of Assembly over what they described as years of denial of legal recognition of their service.

In a petition signed by their counsel, Tope Temokun, the officers lamented that since the establishment of Amotekun in 2020, no officer in Ondo State has been issued a letter of appointment, unlike their counterparts in Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun who are fully documented.

The petition, dated September 8, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker of the House through the Clerk, accused the State of treating its security operatives as “casual workers,” despite their dangerous duties.

Temokun argued that the reliance on warrant cards instead of appointment letters amounted to a violation of Section 7 of the Labour Act, the principles of fair labour practices under Section 17(3) of the 1999 Constitution, and Article 15 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The petition also warned that the absence of official documentation could open the payroll of the Amotekun Corps to ghost workers, thereby draining government resources.

The aggrieved officers, who have risked their lives on frontlines across Ondo communities, prayed the House to intervene urgently by mandating the issuance of appointment letters, full recognition of years served, and inclusion in pension and gratuity schemes.

The petition was copied to the Attorney-General of Ondo State, the Committees on Allocation, Welfare and Human Capital Development, as well as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state.
