Ondo Pension Commission Pushes for Stronger Legislative Support

Ondo State Pension Commission has appealed for stronger legislative support from the State House of Assembly to consolidate ongoing reforms and guarantee the welfare of retirees.

The Director General of the Commission, Mr. Babatunde Adefusi-Owate, made the appeal during an oversight visit by the House Committee on Human Capital Development, Labour, Productivity, and Pension in Akure.

Adefusi-Owate noted that Ondo State was recently rated among the top-performing states in pension management by the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), attributing the achievement to the reforms championed by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration.

“This feat would not have been possible without the commitment and support of His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, whose leadership has provided the enabling environment for reforms in pension administration.

His continued prioritization of workers’ and retirees’ welfare has been a major driver of our success,” he said.

He explained that the state had successfully implemented the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) as a strategic step toward financial security for retirees.

However, he emphasized the need for automation of pension management software, enforcement of compliance in tertiary institutions, greater operational autonomy, and legislative review to strengthen the system.

Seeking synergy with the Assembly, Adefusi-Owate stressed that sustaining reforms and enhancing institutional capacity were essential to ensuring retirees enjoy dignity and peace of mind after years of service.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Tope Agbulu, commended the Commission and the state government for the effective implementation of the CPS, describing it as a bold initiative to safeguard the future of pensioners.

Agbulu assured that lawmakers remain committed to advancing retirees’ welfare.

He urged the Commission to intensify sensitization campaigns on the benefits of the scheme, decentralize registration processes, and deepen collaboration with state and local pension boards to fast-track the settlement of retirees’ entitlements.
