Ondo Magistrate Under Fire Over Alleged Abuse of Judicial Power

by Roving

A tenant in Akure, Mr. Niyi Aguda, has petitioned the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Hon. Justice Olusegun Odusola, accusing Magistrate Kolawole Aro of gross abuse of judicial office and violation of the constitutional right to fair hearing.

In his petition dated September 23, 2025, Aguda alleged that on September 19, some men identified as Oyekanmi Isijola and Olaniran Isijola, accompanied by policemen from the Area Command in Akure, forcefully broke into his apartment and that of his landlady, Mrs. Mary Isijola, who is currently abroad.

The tenant claimed that his belongings were thrown out and the locks to the apartments changed, under the guise of enforcing a court order purportedly issued by Magistrate Aro.

Aguda alleged that the order was granted on the same day it was filed, without any service of the motion on him or his landlady. He attached a copy of the enrolment of order as evidence.

“It is against the principle of fair hearing for a magistrate to grant a motion on notice on the same day it was filed without serving the affected parties. This is a violation of my fundamental right,” Aguda stated in the petition.

He further accused the magistrate of a pattern of questionable rulings that have repeatedly subjected the judiciary to public embarrassment, stressing that this latest case has sparked widespread arguments and condemnation in the public domain.

Aguda appealed to the Chief Judge to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action to preserve the integrity of the Ondo State Judiciary.

The petition was also copied to the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission in Akure.
