The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, has cautioned officers against extortion, misconduct, and collaboration with criminals, vowing to sanction any erring personnel.

Lawal issued the warning on Friday during a strategic meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders at the Command Headquarters in Akure.

The meeting reviewed recent operations, evaluated performance, and set new security priorities for the state.

The police chief commended officers for recent successes, including arrests of criminals, recovery of stolen vehicles, foiling of kidnap attempts, and the neutralization of armed gangs.

He urged his men to sustain momentum through intelligence-led policing and strong community partnerships with traditional rulers, religious leaders, transport unions, and other stakeholders.

With the ember months, political activities, and Independence Day celebrations approaching, CP Lawal directed intensified patrols and stronger community engagement.

He, however, warned against unauthorized roadblocks and extortion, especially as the enforcement of tinted glass permit regulations begins on October 2.

He reminded officers of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s directive that offenders would face decisive disciplinary measures.

Commanders in border communities with Kogi, Edo, and Osun States were tasked to heighten surveillance and collaborate with locals for intelligence gathering.

Lawal also reiterated that police officers must not interfere in civil matters such as land disputes, tenancy, debt recovery, or family disagreements, stressing that defaulters will be punished.

The commissioner emphasized humane policing, directing regular inspection of police cells and reminding officers that torture and ill-treatment of suspects are prohibited under the Police Act 2020.

Addressing recent viral videos exposing corrupt practices by some policemen, the Commissioner declared zero tolerance for extortion, indiscriminate arrests, and incivility at checkpoints, warning that culprits would face immediate discipline.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Ondo State with fairness, professionalism, and integrity.
