A 27-year-old carpenter, identified as Toheeb Ahmed, has been arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The tragic incident, which occurred at Aiyegbami Street, has thrown the community into shock and confusion.
Eyewitnesses said Ahmed had been visiting the victim’s residence at odd hours since last Thursday. Suspicion grew when he reportedly told a shop owner that his grandmother, popularly called “Mama,” had died but asked that no one be informed.
Curiosity led neighbours to check on the elderly woman, only to discover that she had been hacked to death in her room.
“When he returned carrying a cutlass and accompanied by a friend, it seemed they planned to move the corpse. That was when I raised the alarm,” a neighbour recounted.
The deceased, who had been blind for many years, was described by residents as a quiet and harmless woman. Her killing has been widely condemned, with many blaming it on rising moral decay among youths.
The spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, adding that investigations are ongoing to unravel the full circumstances of the crime.
