The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Hon. Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely for alleged gross misconduct and financial impropriety.

The decision followed a resolution passed by the Owo Local Government Legislative Council, led by Hon. Doyin Adebayo, during its sitting on Wednesday in Owo.

A statement issued after the sitting revealed that a two-thirds majority of the 11 councillors supported the motion to suspend Omolayo.

According to the council’s resolution, the action was taken “to ensure good governance and accountability in Owo Local Government.”

The lawmakers accused Omolayo of violating budgetary and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) regulations, disrespecting traditional rulers, and failing to conduct himself appropriately in office.

During the period of suspension, Hon. Hamed Ibrahim, the Vice Chairman, will serve as Acting Chairman of the council.

The statement read in part:

“The allegations against Hon. Omolayo include financial improprieties, violation of statutory budget and IGR rules, disrespect to traditional heads, and failure to uphold the standards of his office. These allegations are serious and require thorough investigation.”

The council further directed the Head of Local Government Administration to effect immediate changes to bank signatories, recognizing Ibrahim as the new acting chairman.

It also ordered Omolayo to hand over all council properties in his possession to the Head of Administration.

“We urge all stakeholders and residents of Owo Local Government Area to remain calm and cooperative as the investigation proceeds,” the statement added.

The lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and good governance, stressing that the decision was taken in the best interest of the people of Owo.
