... Clarifies Band Upgrade
…Says Ondo now fully controls its electricity market
The Ondo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Johnson Alabi, has dismissed claims that he is working in favour of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), insisting that his ministry is only implementing state-approved electricity regulations.
Reacting in an exclusive interview with Roving Reporters in Akure, the state capital, Alabi clarified that the recent outcry over increased electricity bills was due to “band upgrade” and not a tariff hike imposed by BEDC.
“Far from it,” he said. “It is wrong to say I am working for BEDC. As a matter of fact, we only protect their business interest as part of the government’s promise to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in Ondo State — while also protecting our citizens.”
Alabi explained that since October 2023, Ondo State had taken full control of its electricity market and now determines tariffs through the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB).
“If anybody accuses BEDC of increasing tariff, the person is actually talking to the Ondo State Government,” he stated. “It is now our responsibility, through OSERB, to set tariffs for BEDC’s operations in Ondo State.”
He acknowledged the economic pressure on residents, noting that the state government is working towards reducing electricity costs.
“We know people are feeling the heat and we cannot help it for now. Even though government has plans underway to reduce electricity tariff in Ondo State, we are not yet there,” he said.
The Commissioner explained that customers on Band A — who now enjoy longer supply hours — are no longer covered by federal subsidy, hence the higher cost per kilowatt hour.
“For instance, in my house, I used to have six hours of electricity daily; now I have 18 hours. If I paid ₦3,000 before, it means I’ll pay ₦9,000 now. That’s the logic — more hours, more payment,” Alabi explained.
He urged citizens to report billing irregularities directly to OSERB, stressing that refunds would be made where necessary.
“If you recharge and don’t get the expected units, or notice overbilling, report to the Bureau. We will investigate and ensure your money is refunded,” he assured.
Alabi also noted that Ondo is no longer under the control of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
“Some people still threaten to petition NERC — but NERC cannot do anything in Ondo State anymore. Electricity regulation is now our own affair,” he declared.
On power generation, Alabi revealed that the state plans to launch gas-fired power projects, but the instability in foreign exchange rates has delayed implementation.
“Electricity generation is priced in dollars, and forex instability affects project cost. However, we’ve already licensed some private firms that will soon begin power generation in the state,” he disclosed.
He appealed for patience and understanding from residents, assuring that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration is committed to improving electricity distribution, transmission, and generation.
“This is the only state I have; I live here. There’s no reason I would play games with anyone’s welfare. Give us time — we will deliver on our promises,” he said.
