In a move reflecting deep respect for the traditional institution, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Thursday, presented brand-new vehicles to traditional rulers across the state, pledging continued support for their welfare and roles in grassroots governance.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Ondo State Council of Obas Secretariat along Igbatoro Road, Akure, marked what the governor described as a “fulfilment of promise” to uplift the traditional institution and strengthen peace and development at the community level.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the vehicles symbolised dignity, honour, and respect for royal fathers who have remained steadfast in ensuring peace and security within their domains.

“All Grade ‘A’ Obas in Ondo State will receive Toyota Fortuner Jeeps, 2025 models, while Grade ‘B’ and ‘C’ Obas will soon get Toyota Cross Jeeps, 2025 models,” he announced. “This gesture is a mark of appreciation for their invaluable service and commitment to grassroots peacebuilding.”

The governor noted that within his first year in office, his administration had completed the long-abandoned Secretariat for the Council of Obas and ensured the consistent payment of the statutory 5 per cent allocation from local government funds to traditional institutions.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, described the event as a demonstration of appreciation and recognition of the Obas’ indispensable roles in sustaining unity and fostering community growth.

Similarly, the Chairman of Akure South Local Government and Ondo State ALGON, Dr. Gbenga Fasua, lauded the governor’s inclusive leadership style, noting that the gesture reflected his commitment to grassroots development.

Responding on behalf of the royal fathers, the Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas and Olowo of Owo, Oba (Dr) Ajibade Ogunoye III, praised the governor for keeping his word, describing the move as a clear demonstration of respect and partnership between the state and the traditional institution.

“This administration has shown uncommon regard for the traditional institution,” the monarch said. “These vehicles will enhance our mobility and efficiency in serving our communities.”

The event drew top government officials, council chairmen, and dignitaries, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa; and NDDC Executive Director of Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, among others.
