Residents of Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, were thrown into shock and grief after the Ondo State Police Command arrested a 55-year-old man, Ademola Joshua, over the alleged sexual abuse of his niece, a 15-year-old girl.

The arrest followed a distressing report by a concerned family member, who alerted the police after discovering that the teenager was pregnant.

Confirming the development on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the case highlights the silent trauma faced by many minors within supposedly safe family spaces.

“This is a deeply disturbing case that underscores the need for vigilance and courage in reporting abuse, especially when it occurs within the family,” Jimoh said.

According to police sources, the complainant, identified as Adewale, reported that suspicions were raised when efforts were made to determine the cause of the victim’s pregnancy, leading to the alleged discovery of prolonged sexual abuse.

The police said the matter was immediately transferred to the Command’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Unit to ensure a discreet and professional investigation that prioritises the welfare of the minor.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” DSP Jimoh added.

Beyond the legal process, the incident has ignited conversations within the Ilara-Mokin community about the hidden dangers faced by children and the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of family ties.

Reaffirming the Command’s stance, the police spokesperson stressed that Ondo State Police would not tolerate any form of sexual or gender-based violence.

“The Command remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women and children. No offender will be shielded, and justice will be pursued without compromise,” he said.

The police also noted that the arrest aligns with the reform-driven and gender-sensitive policing agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, aimed at strengthening protection for vulnerable groups nationwide.

While commending the courage of the complainant, the Command urged parents, guardians, neighbours and community leaders to remain alert and report any suspicion of abuse promptly.

“Silence enables abuse. Timely information can save a child and restore hope,” Jimoh said.
