Ondo Amotekun, Agitators Clash Over Alleged ‘Accidental Discharge’ at Training Ground

by Roving

A controversy has erupted over reports of an alleged accidental discharge at the Ondo State Amotekun Corps New Recruitment Training Ground in Owo, with the Corps leadership firmly denying claims that its Commander was responsible for a shooting incident that reportedly left five personnel injured.

Some online media platforms had earlier reported that an accidental discharge from the firearm of the Amotekun Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, allegedly wounded four serving officers and a newly recruited personnel during activities at the training ground.

However, the Ondo State Amotekun Corps has dismissed the report as “false, misleading and deliberately sensationalised.”

In a press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Corps, S.A. Jimoh O. Adeniken, the outfit stated that “at no time did the Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, discharge a firearm accidentally or otherwise, nor was he involved in any incident leading to gunshot injuries.”

The statement explained that the activity carried out at the training ground on January 26, 2026, was a “routine range classification exercise” for newly recruited personnel, stressing that the exercise was concluded “successfully without any casualty.”

“The false narrative being circulated is a gross misrepresentation of facts and a deliberate attempt to undermine the image of the Corps and the security of Ondo State,” the statement said.

Despite the denial, the report has continued to generate reactions, particularly from a group described as Amotekun agitators, who claimed that five personnel sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

The group expressed concern over the welfare and medical condition of the affected officers, calling on the state government to ensure they receive proper medical care.

They also used the alleged incident to renew long-standing demands for improved welfare, including confirmation letters, full inclusion on the government payroll, and access to a functional pension scheme.

“We will not stop demanding justice, structure and dignity for Ondo State Amotekun personnel,” the group said in a separate statement.

The Amotekun Corps, however, urged the public and the media to “disregard unverified reports” and rely solely on information from its official communication channels, reiterating that it remains “a disciplined, professional and law-abiding security outfit committed to the safety of its personnel and the people of Ondo State.”
