“My Mother Knew, but She Did Nothing”: 14-Year-Old Girl raped by Stepfather

EKITI: My name ( withheld for privacy), but I want you to hear my story—not just for me, but for every girl who has been hurt and silenced.

I was only 14 years old and in primary Six when it started. My mother had married a man named Jayeoba Oluwafemi. We didn’t live with him all the time, but he often came to sleep in our house—especially when my mother wasn’t around.

On October 26, 2020, my mother traveled to Lagos. That night, he stayed at our house.

I was asleep when he woke me up in the middle of the night and forced himself on me. I screamed, I cried, I bled—but he didn’t stop.

The next morning, I called my mother and told her what happened. She confronted him, but he denied it. And that was it. She did nothing.

After that, it became a nightmare that never ended. Each time my mother left, he came to me again.

I kept telling her, hoping she would finally protect me, but she never did. When he realized I had been telling her, he began to threaten me. I lived in fear—not just of him, but of being ignored, again and again.

One day, he tried to beat me, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran out of the house, crying.

On the road, I met a woman who listened to me—really listened. She told me to go to the governor’s office and report him. That was the beginning of everything changing.

The police got involved. I told them everything. Doctors examined me. The truth came out.

In court, I faced him again. I was no longer just a scared little girl—I was someone demanding justice. The judge listened. The truth was heard.

On May 26, 2025, Justice Adekunle Adeleye found him guilty of raping me multiple times. The judge said it wasn’t just one night—it was a pattern of abuse.

He called my stepfather’s denial “an afterthought.” And then, he sentenced him to life in prison.

I can’t undo what happened. I still carry the pain. But I have my voice. I told the truth. And this time, someone listened.

The Court Case

An Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti has sentenced one Jayeoba Oluwafemi to life imprisonment for raping his 14- year-old stepdaughter.

The 56-year-old convict was arraigned before Justice Adekunle Adeleye on 4th December, 2020 on one count charge bordering on rape.

The charge reads that, ” the defendant on 26th October, 2020 at Ado Ekiti within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did rape a fourteen year old girl, contrary to Section 31 (2) of the Child’s Right Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

To prove his case, the prosecutor, Julius Ajibare called six witnesses and tendered defendant’s statement and medical report as exhibits.

The defendant who was on bail two years ago spoke in his own defense through his lawyer, Oladele Adedeji, he called one witness.

In his judgment on Monday, Justice Adekunle Adeleye said, ” I am of the humble view that the sexual intercourse sessions were on several occasions, it was not a one off affair.

“And upon careful analysis of the entire circumstance of this case, the change in story or outright denial by the defendant is an afterthought.

The prosecution has established the offence of rape against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.

“He is accordingly found guilty as charged and hereby sentenced to life imprisonment as provided for under the provisions of Section 31 (2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Law of Ekiti State, 2012.”
