••• Police Accused of Collusion and Cover-Up

“Justice must not be for sale,” says NAOSS Emeritus President as she vows legal action

In a chilling revelation that has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for police accountability, Mary Ogunga, the Emeritus National President of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS), has accused a police officer in the Ondo State Command of aiding and abetting suspected cultists who violently assaulted a commercial motorcyclist and allegedly intimidated her in broad daylight.

The disturbing incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, when Ogunga became an eyewitness — and near victim — of what she described as a “coordinated act of violence and intimidation” involving members of the notorious Eye cult group and an officer from the Surveillance Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, identified only as Supol Banty.

“These individuals, under the influence of drugs and wielding weapons, openly bragged about being members of the Eye fraternity celebrating their anniversary,” Ogunga said in her statement.

“They viciously attacked an innocent bike rider, leaving him bleeding — and to my greatest shock, the police officer on duty sided with the assailants.”

According to her report, after a reckless U-turn caused a collision between the cultists’ vehicle and the motorcycle she was riding, the group attacked the bike man with metal rods and broken glass, leaving him injured.

Despite her attempt to seek police intervention, the officer allegedly dismissed the case, claimed it had been “settled,” and forced the injured rider to pay for the vehicle’s damaged side mirror.

“It was clear they had bribed the officer,” Ogunga stated. “What I witnessed was not law enforcement, it was extortion. And I will not be silent.”

The former student leader’s impassioned statement has triggered a wave of responses on social media and within student communities, with many condemning the growing culture of impunity and corruption among some elements within the Nigeria Police Force.

NAOSS Demands Justice

The NAOSS leadership has demanded a full investigation into the incident, including disciplinary measures against any officer found guilty of misconduct or collusion with criminal elements.

Ogunga warned that failure to act will result in mass protests and potential legal action against the Nigeria Police Force.

“If this matter is not thoroughly investigated, I will mobilize the student body for sustained protest and legal action,” she said.

“No citizen should be made to feel less human because they lack the means to bribe their way to justice.”

Civil Society, Rights Groups React

Several civil society organizations, including the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), have expressed concern over the incident and echoed calls for the Inspector General of Police to take urgent action.

“This case illustrates a systemic failure in protecting ordinary citizens,” said CHRSJ spokesperson, Oluwasegun Adegbite.

“We demand that the Ondo State Police Command initiate a transparent investigation and bring all culprits to justice.”

Police launch Investigation

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer Olushola Ayanlade said,

“Upon the receipt of the reported conspiracy of our officer with acclaimed Yahoo boys, the commissioner of Police Ondo state police command has ordered immediate investigation into this allegation.

“Hence, the command urges anyone with information or evidence that will aid the investigation to come forward.

“Ondo police command remains resolute in ensuring safety and security of all citizens regardless of their social status or rank.”

Calls for accountability continue to grow louder, with observers warning that failure to act decisively could further erode public trust in the police and embolden cultist elements across the state.
