In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of Akure and Ondo State at large, the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, has bestowed the prestigious chieftaincy title of Asiwaju of Akure on Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

At a grand ceremony held in the Ondo State capital, the monarch also conferred the title of Yeye Asiwaju on Abegunde’s wife, honouring their combined efforts in advancing the welfare of the Akure people during his tenure in public service — including his time as a member of the House of Representatives and as SSG.

Oba Aladelusi noted that the Asiwaju title is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to community development. He recalled that previous title holders, such as the late Wumi Adegbonmire and Prof. Olu Agbi, also served as SSGs — a tradition now carried on by Abegunde.

The monarch charged the new Asiwaju with the task of fostering unity among the people of Akure and working towards the town’s continued progress, regardless of political or social affiliations.

In his acceptance speech, Hon. Abegunde expressed gratitude to the Deji and the people of Akure for the honour, promising to live up to the expectations attached to the revered title.

“When it comes to the issue of Akureland, we do not play politics,” Abegunde declared. “As the Asiwaju, I will support the Kabiyesi and the people of Akure. I will continue to look for what is good for Akure and ask Akure to support me for what is good for Akure.”

He added that the new role places upon him the responsibility to serve as a father figure to all Akure indigenes, irrespective of their status or background.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony was the Minister of Youth Development, Hon. Ayo Olawande, who joined others in celebrating the honour bestowed on the former lawmaker.
