Stop Enduring Abuse in Marriage – Ondo Priest warns Couples

by Roving

Canon Emmanuel Adewale of St Thomas’s Anglican Church, Isinkan, Akure, has expressed deep concern over the rising wave of divorces, even among Christian couples, warning that the sacred institution of marriage is under severe attack.

Speaking during Sunday’s service, the cleric lamented that many couples no longer uphold the sanctity of marriage as ordained by God for companionship, mutual support, and procreation. According to him, this disregard is tearing families apart and threatening the moral foundation of society.

“Divorce has not only become common, it has crept into the church, tearing Christian homes apart. It is a tragedy that demands urgent attention,” Canon Adewale said.

He emphasized the need for couples to submit their homes to the leadership of God, noting that only divine guidance could guarantee blissful and lasting unions.

While reiterating that God abhors divorce, Canon Adewale was quick to caution that no one should endure domestic violence in the name of religious obligation. He advised victims of abuse to seek help immediately and consider separation as a temporary safety measure while efforts are made to resolve the crisis.

“Love and unity are not negotiable in any Christian marriage,” he added. “We must raise children in peaceful and godly homes if we want a better society.”

Canon Adewale called for deliberate efforts by church leaders, families, and the larger Christian community to address the rot threatening marriages, urging a return to biblical principles of commitment, forgiveness, and sacrificial love.
