A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Asiwaju Olumuyiwa Asagunla, has warned that it would be a national disgrace if the party fails to secure overwhelming victory in Ondo State in the 2027 general elections, despite occupying strategic positions at both the federal and state levels.
Asagunla made the statement on Wednesday while addressing some stalwarts and stakeholders in Akure.
“How can we explain to Nigerians that despite having a sitting governor, two substantive ministers, and national recognition within the APC structure, we still lose Ondo State in 2027?” Asagunla questioned, adding that such a failure would reflect deep cracks within the state party machinery.
He emphasized that the party must not take the electorate for granted, warning that opposition forces are already strategizing, albeit confused about which platform to use.
“They don’t even know if it’s ADC or ADA anymore,” he said, referring to fractured opposition movements. “But if we fail to mobilize and unite, they could surprise us.”
According to him, the formation of a group known as AMG was a grassroots response to ensure APC maintains its grip on the state. “We put our heads together, all 26 of us, contributed ₦100,000 each to kickstart AMG. Since then, we’ve inaugurated state and local government executives, and revealed our membership structure,” he explained.
Asagunla highlighted the commitment of federal actors, particularly “Star Boy” — a reference to one of the Ondo ministers — and said all stakeholders must come together in unison to deliver what he called “a clean sweep.”
“If those three — the governor and two ministers — work together, there’s no excuse. It’s 18-0 or nothing,” he said, referencing the 18 local government areas in Ondo.
Asagunla concluded by urging party members to stay alert, watch political trends, and “sensitize our people early” to build a united front that can guarantee APC’s dominance in the South West.
