Ondo Principals lament Teachers Shortage, Demand Recruitments

The Association of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) has urged the Ondo State Government to make annual recruitment of teachers a key feature of its ongoing reforms in the education sector.

The call was made during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, where the association presented a position paper detailing urgent employment and welfare needs in the state’s schools.

Presenting the demands, ANCOPSS President, Dr. Fadekemi Jogbodo, said the shortage of teachers remained a major challenge.

“Education cannot move forward without adequate manpower. We are calling on government to prioritize annual recruitment of teachers, especially in science and computer-related subjects,” she stated.

She also advocated for the provision of laboratory facilities, appointment of security personnel to schools, recognition of outstanding teachers, and the elevation of principals to Level 17.

Dr. Jogbodo further called on government to increase the number of Tutor Generals in the state from three to nine, to reflect the growing demands in the education sector.

While responding, Commissioner Ajibefun acknowledged the association’s concerns and reiterated Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to revitalizing education.

“The Governor has already approved the construction and rehabilitation of schools across the state. Recruitment of quality teachers is also on our priority list, because we know education without manpower is empty,” Ajibefun assured.

He disclosed that plans were underway for a stakeholders’ meeting where all education partners would be engaged on the reform agenda.

The commissioner added:

“We want to speak with one voice in this sector. I can assure you that the issue of recruitment and welfare of teachers is being given serious attention.”
