In a landmark stride toward sustainable governance, the Executive Chairman of Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Hon. Adebare Adeboye, has commissioned a solar-paneled car park that generates renewable electricity for the Local Government Secretariat.
The project — the first of its kind in the council’s history — transforms the Secretariat’s car park into a dual-purpose facility, providing shade for vehicles while serving as a mini-solar power station.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Ile-Oluji, Hon. Adeboye described the initiative as a product of “vision, creativity, and commitment to sustainable governance.”
“Our focus is on practical innovations that solve real problems. This solar-paneled car park demonstrates that local governments can drive the green-energy revolution and save costs while doing so,” he said.
According to details from the Works Department, the facility is equipped with high-efficiency solar panels, inverters, and battery storage units capable of powering critical administrative operations throughout the day.
Beyond providing stable electricity, the car park canopy protects vehicles from harsh weather and reduces the council’s dependence on diesel generators and the erratic national grid.
The system has reportedly slashed fuel consumption, lowered maintenance costs, and created a cleaner, quieter work environment for staff.
Local artisans and technicians handled the installation, while youths in the area received hands-on training in solar maintenance, further boosting local capacity.
A civil servant at the Secretariat, Mrs. Afolake Olaniyan, lauded the initiative:
“This is innovation we can see and feel. Our offices now have power without the noise or fumes of generators.”
Hon. Adeboye added that plans were underway to replicate the project across selected health centres and schools within the council area to enhance service delivery and energy independence.
“We want to leave behind a legacy of innovation that others can build on,” he said. “This shows that smart ideas can thrive even at the grassroots.”
The project marks another milestone in Ondo State’s steady transition to renewable energy and sustainable public infrastructure.
