Tragedy struck on Thursday along the Akure–Owo Expressway near the Ogbese–Bolorunduro axis of Ondo State when a tipper truck reportedly lost control and crashed into a commercial vehicle, leaving several passengers dead.
Eyewitnesses said the tipper, which was heavily loaded, veered off its lane and rammed head-on into the passenger vehicle, killing many occupants instantly.
The impact of the collision was described as devastating, with both vehicles severely damaged.
Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of filing this report, as emergency responders and sympathizers battled to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage.
The crash caused a temporary gridlock on the busy expressway.
Although the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed, eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed a gory scene, with several lifeless bodies and pools of blood scattered along the road.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, were yet to release an official statement on the cause of the accident and the number of victims involved as of press time.
