A massive security operation code-named Operation Sweep has been launched in Akoko North East Local Government Area to rid the region of hard drugs and restore sanity to the streets.
The Executive Chairman of the council, Alhaji Mohammed Mutiu Olawale, led the dawn operation that brought together all major security formations operating within the local government, including the Nigeria Police Force, NDLEA, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, forest guards, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), and community youth leaders.
The team moved tactically through identified drug hotspots and red zones across several communities, dismantling criminal hideouts, arresting suspects, and seizing dangerous substances.
Speaking after the operation, Alhaji Olawale described the exercise as “a strategic and moral duty to secure the future of our youths and reclaim our communities from the grip of drug abuse.”
“This effort is more than an operation,” he said. “It’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to safeguard lives, restore public sanity, and secure the future of our young people. If you want to see tomorrow, you must plant discipline today.”
He issued a stern warning to all those still involved in the sale or consumption of hard drugs, declaring that “their days of impunity are numbered.”
The council boss also called for collective responsibility among residents, parents, religious figures, and youth leaders to complement government efforts in the fight against drug abuse.
“Together, we can stop the flow before it becomes a flood that sweeps us all away,” Olawale added.
Local residents hailed the initiative as a welcome development, describing it as a “bold step towards saving a generation.”
