The Executive Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Hon. Ayo Ajana, on Wednesday launched a special welfare scheme benefiting 300 elderly persons across the council area.

The scheme, unveiled at the council secretariat in Oka Akoko, provides ₦20,000 monthly stipends with arrears from August to date—amounting to ₦80,000 already disbursed to each beneficiary.

Ajana described the initiative as a practical demonstration of democracy at the grassroots and a reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance.

He said the support package aims to ease hardship and reassure senior citizens that they remain a priority in government planning.

He also expressed appreciation to the Ondo State Governor, Hon. Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, “for creating an enabling environment that empowers local governments to deliver people-centred programmes.”

Highlighting achievements recorded within ten months of his tenure, Ajana listed road grading across all 15 wards, the rehabilitation and reticulation of the solar-powered borehole at Korowa in Oka, and the construction of two single-cell box culverts at Owase/Iboje Quarters.

He added that Imesi Road in Supare Akoko has been filled and graded.

He further noted that the oldest building in the council secretariat—housing the Works, Community and NYSC units—has been fully renovated. New vehicles have also been procured for royal fathers, while a Toyota Hiace bus was purchased for the legislative arm.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, HRM Oba Stephen Oloruntele Ogunoye I, the Olusin of Owalusin, Iwaro Oka Akoko, commended the initiative as a landmark achievement in grassroots administration.

He praised both Governor Aiyedatiwa and Hon. Ajana for prioritising the wellbeing of the elderly.

Beneficiaries, represented by Alhaji Ishola Lawal and Chief Mrs Alonge Abigail, described the gesture as unprecedented in the history of the local government.

The event was attended by royal fathers, council officials, political leaders, councillors and appointees of the Ajana administration.
