Ondo Cracks Down on Illegal Political Billboards, Gives 42-Hour Ultimatum

The Ondo State Government has raised alarm over the growing proliferation of political billboards and visual campaign materials across the state, particularly in the Southern Senatorial District.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Signage and Advertisement, Mr. Yomi Oyekan, said the uncontrolled spread of unapproved political advertisements violates existing regulations guiding outdoor advertising in the state.

While affirming that political participation remains a vital part of democratic engagement, Oyekan stressed that no individual, political party, group, or organisation is exempt from complying with the rules of the Ondo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OSSAA).

He stated that the erection or display of any billboard, banner, poster, or outdoor political material without prior communication and express approval from OSSAA is illegal, regardless of political affiliation or influence.

Consequently, the state government has directed all those responsible for such materials to immediately engage OSSAA for approval and regularisation. A 42-hour grace period, beginning Monday, December 22, has been granted for compliance.

Oyekan warned that upon expiration of the deadline, the agency would begin the confiscation and removal of all unapproved billboards and campaign materials across the state without further notice.

He also cautioned registered advertising agencies to settle all outstanding statutory fees, noting that failure to do so would affect the approval status and validity of advertisements displayed on their structures.

According to him, the directive is aimed at ensuring environmental orderliness, public safety, and improved urban aesthetics, while preventing visual pollution across Ondo State.

The office, he added, remains committed to supporting lawful political communication while enforcing equal compliance with signage and advertisement regulations.
